but you should know the way I feel
Dec. 10th, 2011 11:31 pmI need a little bit of a break from writing, so... meme? Unfortunately I'm too lazy to go look up where I last saw it, but the idea is this:
Leave a comment here and I'll pick five of your icons for you to explain, describe, or otherwise comment on.
Feel free to post your final responses here or in your own journal.

You know how much I love Lost in Translation. One of my favorite things about it is the way Bob Harris takes a good look at himself and sees how he needs to change and grow. This little snippet, this image of Bob looking so resigned as he examines himself in the mirror, is one of my favorite parts. He's a guy who can't win for losing. It might be a tiny character growth arc, but it's there in an understated and beautiful way. Plus, Bill Murray. It's my favorite role of his.
Margaret Schroeder from Boardwalk Empire! It's the fantastic Kelly MacDonald, she of Trainspotting and Finding Neverland and a dozen other things. I love this picture of her, love the way she's just looking out the window at the world outside. In a way it sums up her character at this early point in the series (she changes a lot as it goes on) but I just kind of love the sense of anticipation in this one.
Alistair. I realized when I was looking for icons for his journal that he has about three expressions used over and over again. I found this one with the heart and was just inexplicably delighted by it. He's such a mush, such a sweetheart of a character, and so eager to fall, you know? He's the epitome of "I love you" being impossibly hard to say.
Ahem. This is a completely gratuitous choice! Mr. Trucco and his mystery tattoo! Actually, I'm kind of in love with scars. They're such badges of honor, whether they're accidental or surgical like this one or the result of some sort of foul play, they're just fascinating to me in the way all perceived imperfections are fascinating to me. On a totally different note, Justin's on the phone a lot and this is one of my favorite shots of him with a phone pressed to his ear.
It's hot Uncle Cooper! I'm not much of a One Tree Hill fan and don't even get me started on Chad Michael Murray, but... I mean... Uncle Cooper. They're in the hospital in this scene waiting on news of Lucas's (CMM's) half-brother Nathan and they've just gotten out of their race cars (I can't explain, it's a long story) so they're all wind-burned and HOT. Or at least one of them is. I actually just made this one the other day because I figured no one can have enough icons of two guys looking surprised or expectant, especially when Michael Trucco's one of them.
Do I get to ask you about five of yours?

Haha, that made me laugh.
You can! I can handle that much of a distraction. Easy access! (http://www.livejournal.com/allpics.bml?user=lostinapapercup)

Date: 2011-12-11 06:12 am (UTC)Actually this is one of my favorite moments between Kara and Lee, and I adore Starbuck in general in this episode. I like this whole scene: Lee's aggression during target practice (not unwarranted for once, as his father was so recently shot!), Kara calling him out on it, the skepticism that Chief's new project would fly, Kara's confident insistence ("watch me!") that she'd fly it, her helpless silly laughter as the loss of oxygen gets to them (Hot Dog looks like a blueberry), and the desperate way she and Lee work to together when they're down to the wire. This is one of their finer moments for this point in canon; they don't always manage to work so well together.
I just made this the other day! Obviously I'm a sucker for Spike and his whole storyline. The original art, which I'm sure you've seen, has Faye in it, and as much as I love Faye I always wished her placement was to the other side of Spike because it would've been relationship symmetry. I edited Faye out of the image for purposes of a Julia profile picture (only because Faye wasn't pertinent to her backstory), and I just had the urge to icon it the other day. I wanted it kind of stark in comparison to the louder colors of the original image and so I went black-and-white with it, played with the contrast and saturation, and then tinted it with the most appropriate color I could think of. I like the way it turned out.
Aw, the Kate/Sayid that never was. I don't need to tell you how much I could've gotten behind it. Despite the similarities between Kate and Sawyer, one outcast to another, I often feel like Kate and Sayid had the most similar hang-ups and the most similar desires for their future. Add to that the fact that they almost never treated each other with any disrespect and were so often working together as an action team, and I could always see such potential. I don't know, but I just find this icon very visually appealing. Look at them in their white tanks, Kate listening as Sayid gives hushed advice on catching Sawyer in the act.
It's Eponine! I was somewhere around ten when I first heard Les Mis, and I loved her character immediately. Considering how young I was at the time, she may have been My First Favorite Tragic Character. Regardless, I'm glued to her passages on every reread of the novel (and she's even more complex there!) and to her scenes every time I see the show. She's stubborn, dirt-poor, street-smart, in unrequited love, and so doomed: they don't make them much more tragic. (As an aside I just recently heard they're making a movie of the musical, and I am beside myself with conflicted emotions. I mean, in general I kind of tend to feel like movie versions of musicals are pretty unnecessary. But... Les Mis! I'm actually kind of intrigued by what I've read of the cast so far, with the exception of Russell Crowe as Javert, what.)
I don't know about you, but I love the fight between Chane and Ladd on top of the train. I love how crazy it is, I love all of his observations about her, and she was deflecting bullets with her knives. It's a pretty badass scene.

Date: 2011-12-11 06:27 am (UTC)One of these days I will read or watch Les Mis. And the whole thing that takes place on top of the Flying Pussyfoot is just gorgeous. ♥ I love your color work on the Bebop icon, and yeah, just yeah, you have the best icons.

Date: 2011-12-11 06:33 am (UTC)If you do feel inclined to read or watch Les Mis, I'd probably recommend watching it first. The novel is so long and does plod in places, and I say that as a purist who prefers reading the unabridged version.
I don't know that I'd recommend seeing the movie, though; we'll see next year!

Date: 2011-12-11 08:22 pm (UTC)You have so many interesting icons. I think I remember a few I've asked about before so I can eliminate those, but it's still hard! This time I'd like to hear about:

Date: 2011-12-12 05:38 pm (UTC)Poor Ray Kowalski. I have a soft spot for the original Ray from Due South, but Kowalski won me over with through sheer badassitude and awesomeness. He was the loose cannon snark to Fraser's straight-laced manners, and I had to sympathize with him every time Fraser kept him from dealing with the problem in a straight-forward way, like with his sidearm.
And I feel like this a lot of times. Come on, wouldn't a good punch in the jaw solve so many problems?
I know almost everyone on the planet hated this movie, but I have a certain fondness for it, and I loved this image from the promotional pictures. I like that Lois looks kind of annoyed that she had to wait around for Clark, and I like the lighting, and I think that both of them consider the other one to be a hero. They're one of my favorite comic book pairings, and I am mad beyond words that the new 52 broke them up.
Sometimes, you just need a stiff drink. If it's good enough for Kirk, it's good enough for me! Plus, isn't that just so Captain James T.? I'm not sure what episode this is from, but I can't imagine it's anything other than amazing.
I spend a lot of time walking on the beach when I'm at home on Cape Cod, and there's something so soothing about it. This icon got uploaded when I was playing Tia Dalma at Milliways, and I felt like it really encapsulated the feeling of isolation and wistfulness and her long wait, especially when mixed in with the Dark is Rising canon, where she's known as the White Lady.
I feel like this pretty much defines the Winchester boys. They keep moving along the path they've set for themselves, and they're always together. I haven't seen much of this latest season, but that's okay, because this is the image and the feeling from the show that sticks with me.

Date: 2011-12-12 10:31 pm (UTC)I'm always struck by your Superman icon. I just thought the movie was okay, but the icon's great. Like you said, the lighting's gorgeous and it has a certain comic-book feeling even though it's nowhere near cartoony.
I'm always really struck by the walking-on-the-beach icon too! It's one of my absolute favorites of yours.

Date: 2011-12-12 11:37 pm (UTC)(Hey, did you see that Trigun is on instant now? I may need to reacquaint myself with our favorite gun-toting priest.)
Yeah, Clark in particular looks almost likes he's been drawn in, there. It could be a cover for a Superman comic, which is another reason why I love it.
You picked a whole bunch of my favorites!
