I don't mind if you don't mind
Nov. 18th, 2011 03:58 amDear Yuletide Writer:
It's possible I'm even easier to please than ever this year, so rest assured that I am thrilled to have you writing for me and I will be so excited to see what you come up with. The optional details are -- you guessed it -- optional, but if you're the type that wants extra guidance you've come to the right place.
For the friendly Yuletide stalkers, I'm anythingbutblue on AO3 and have convenient links to my yuletide letters from 2010, 2009, 2008, and 2007. I still like the same things. Characterization and strong character voices are like catnip for me. I have a love affair with missing moments, fic that could easily be slipped between episodes of a show or pages of a book and fit there like it was meant to all along. I love characters in shades of gray; I wouldn't want to gloss over the flaws of any of my favorites. I prefer canon to AU and my favorite AUs have a strong canon basis, but the truth is that you can AU if you want and as long as the characters act like they would canonically I'll be with you. As you've probably noticed, I like slice-of-life fic. I like antiheroes, strong independent female characters with tragic events in their pasts, banter between lovers and friends, tight friendships forged in unlikely circumstances, and that conflicted magic that occurs when characters grow to have feelings -- platonic or romantic -- for others and would rather repress it. I don't mind sex in the story I receive, but I don't need it. Whatever the storyline calls for is fine. If there is sex, I prefer no rape and no incest. I'd also appreciate anything explicitly detailed kept to adults of a legal age.
These are the (optional!) details I included in my sign-up:
Caprica
I have multiple possibilities for you write about, any of which I'd love to receive. One possibility is a story of what Tamara was doing from the time we see her shoot herself and then her father in End of Line and the time we're reintroduced to her and her followers once Zoe finds her in Things We Lock Away. Another is a look at how Daniel and Amanda put their lives together again post-finale. Based on the teasers for the second season that never was, I certainly assume they worked on the problems in their relationship. I don't assume things were solved overnight, however, and you can show me the ups and downs of their lives post-series. A third possibility is a look at the relationship between the young Bill Adama -- Bill, not Willie -- and his uncle Sam. Alternatively, if you feel like writing it, I would spread my arms wide and welcome a story that bridges the gap between Caprica and BSG, maybe showcasing a series of key moments in the post-series lives of Caprica characters and the pre-series lives of BSG characters.
I didn't love Caprica as much as I loved Battlestar Galactica, but there's so much fascinating ground to explore! (And it's such a pretty show!) The characters that interest me the most are the Graystones, Tamara, and Sam Adama. You can't go wrong with a focus on any or all of them.
The Killing
What I'd most like to see here is a look at the pre-canon lives of Sarah, the Larsen family, and/or Holder. While I'd appreciate something a little lighter in tone than the series since we're looking back before the fateful day that starts the show, it's obvious that there was no shortage of high points and low points, secrets and lies, joy and sorrow in the lives of any of these characters. If you want to tackle one character or all I've mentioned, that's up to you. I'm also easy to please in regards to how far back before canon you'd like to go. Do you want to give me a handful of moments over the course of years? That's great. Would you rather focus everything only a day or two before Rosie's death? That's equally great. Character studies very welcome here!
I wasn't thrilled with the last episode or two of the season, but The Killing hooked me immediately with its visual appeal and its slow moody mystery. I loved Sarah Linden's quiet gum-chewing competence and her struggles with her son and her fiance (and thanks, Callum Keith Rennie, for making sure I found her relationship with Rick both great and vaguely concerning.) The raw emotions of the Larsens hurt my heart, and I'd love to know more about who Rosie was. I never knew how much to trust Holder and thought the hints about his motivations were fascinating. I don't have much more to add to the possibilities in my request, but I'd love something that captures the slow and moody nature of the show and I will say that if you really wish I'd give you a more narrow focus... you can show me what makes Sarah Linden tick.
The Walking Dead
For this canon I have a craving for a slice of life story featuring Andrea, Shane, Daryl, or any combination of the above. I've seen all of the first season and about half of the second at this point, but I don't mind spoilers. I also haven't read the comic yet, so feel free to use or ignore comic details. With Andrea, I'd particularly like to see more of her dealing with the death of her sister, forging herself into a crack shot, or developing closer friendships with some of the other female characters (I'd particularly enjoy seeing a friendship with Lori, if you're up to writing a character that didn't make the list). For Shane I'd like to see something that explores this do-what-you-have-to-do-to-survive mindset that's developed and/or his complicated friendship with Rick. With Daryl, show me both the good and the bad of his relationships with the people around him. Whichever way you go, don't feel like this story needs to be all slow character study; for these people there's no such thing as a slice of life without zombies. Alternatively, if you want to get a little cracky, I'll admit I could be so entertained by Daryl in a Groundhog Day situation (see TVtropes).
Show me a slice of their life, whether it's literally just a day in the life or a handful of moments singled out from a much larger span of time. I'm interested in Andrea's loss and what she's turning herself into, and I would love to see her bonding with other female characters. I'm interested in the way Shane's becoming such a survivalist and how his friendship with Rick is framed by the loyalty of having been partners and Shane's gone-but-not-forgotten relationship with Lori. I'm interested in Daryl's refusal to be a one-note character; that crossbow may be his best friend, but he's proving that despite appearances he can be pretty decent with people. I mean it: any or all of these characters!
I think that's probably enough. Have fun writing your story, and I'll definitely have fun reading it!
