still proceeding
Dec. 28th, 2010 10:35 pmWe just got back from celebrating Christmas with family, so I'm behind on gushing about my Yuletide gifts. I can't not do it, though; I kind of made out like a bandit again this year and got three fantastic stories.
In the order in which their notifications arrived to my inbox overnight on Christmas Eve:
And Then the Phone Rings - 30 Rock. Liz tries to catch some quality time with Carol and can't catch a break. In my details I'd said that if my author wrote this s/he should feel free to write as many cameos by other characters as desired. This person took that and absolutely ran with it. It isn't easy to write an ensemble of distinct voices in fanfic, and I think my author deserves an award for that. I loved every single obnoxious call poor Liz got, and let's not overlook all the great exchanges between Carol and Liz!
Wishes Granted, Wishes Not - Jo's Boys-era Jo and Laurie. I was one of those girls who grew up with Jo and Laurie as the first fictional couple she ever loved, but my usual desire for fanfic characters to act like their canon counterparts directly conflicts with that longing I once had for Jo to magically change her answer after Laurie proposed. I think "bittersweet" is the perfect word for this story, and that's exactly what I think these two characters should be when I read them together at this point in their lives so I'm completely thrilled by it.
Free - The Last of the Mohicans (the 1992 movie). I will never call this movie's Alice Munro a heroine, but in her last minutes on the screen she suddenly turns into so much more than we've seen her be up until that point. This story captures exactly that moment and exactly that transformation in a way that makes my heart ache on every read. It's a movie moment that's stuck with me for almost two decades, and this beautifully-written story will transport you straight there in a heartbeat.
If my authors happen to be checking: thank you again! You've totally delighted me!
I had my traditional moments of anxiety, but it seems like the story I wrote went over well with my recipient. The comments made me grin like an idiot, at least.
I hope everyone has had a wonderful week and that those who participated in Yuletide have enjoyed reading their gifts!
