lostinapapercup: (all you gotta do is ask)
[personal profile] lostinapapercup
I've gotten my Yuletide assignment, and now that I've read that matching is no longer done in a way that prioritizes rarer fandoms I'm a lot more surprised that I got one of the two I thought seemed most likely. I'm writing for my rarest fandom yet this year!

And speaking of gifts, expanding horizons, (re)connecting with people, I've got a holiday offer for anyone reading this. Yes, anyone! I don't care if you're on my friends list or some stranger wandering over from the Yuletide letter spreadsheet or just someone passing by out of sheer curiosity. If you happen to read this on or before January 1st, you're more than welcome.

My predicament is this: post-wedding, I have even less disposable income. My Christmas shopping has to be budgeted to the point that it kind of makes me want to flail. (The up side is that we had numerous guests let us know they did indeed donate to The Gulf Restoration Network or Child's Play, the two charities we tried to direct donations to in lieu of receiving wedding gifts, and that does feel pretty good.) But I would still like to feel like I'm actively participating in the ongoing holiday season because it's one of my favorite times of year, so here we go.

If you comment here with what you want I will do one of the following for you:

I will write you a fic of at least 500 words.
Prompt me and give me a rating to stay under, if you care about that. Check my interests if you need to; ask if you need clarification for things you know I've watched or read that aren't listed there. The characters I write don't have to be my personal favorites, and I'll happily attempt crossovers. Kara and Sam meeting outside The Walking Dead's Atlanta, GA? Gaius and Six as Anne Rice-style vampires in New Orleans? Kate Austen and Hero Brown on a cross-country road trip? Little Women reimagined with Karl, Lee, Zak, and Sammy instead of Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy? Sorry, too many BSG examples, but you get me. If you have an original non-fanfic prompt in mind I'm willing to work with that too. I'm going to opt out of m/m slash; writing it just isn't my forte, and I'd hate to disappoint. I also opt out of rape, incest, graphic torture, and explicit detail between minors.

I will make five icons for you.
If you have a particular moment from a show in mind I can either cap it myself (see list below) or you can give me the caps you're interested in. I don't consider myself a photo-editing genius by any means, but I have been working on lightening, brightening, and smoothing out BSG caps, which are incredibly dark and often difficult to work with. I like to make them prettier -- subjective, I know! -- but I don't tend to get too crazy with the coloring. I started doing it in the first place because I wanted to make icons for my Starbuck account and for that purpose I prefer textless and color schemes more or less grounded in the reality of the cap. Click here to see some before-and-after examples so you can get an idea of what I'm talking about. If you'd like me to go wilder than my usual coloring habits or go black-and-white or add text you can certainly request that. For even more examples, you can check the lowest cluster of icons here or the caps I've posted elsewhere.

I can cap the following for icon purposes:
Baccano!
Battlestar Galactica (including The Plan)
Caprica (pilot movie only)
Casablanca
Cowboy Bebop (including the movie)
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children
Lost (seasons 1-4 only)
Lost in Translation
Love, Actually
Once Upon a Time in Mexico
The Prestige
The Princess Bride
To Have and Have Not
Samurai Champloo
Scott Pilgrim versus The World
Watchmen (director's cut)

★ This will only appeal to a few, I fear, but I will thread a specific scenario (of your choice) with you!
You choose your character, you choose which of mine I use, you choose whether it's at [livejournal.com profile] ididwhatwithwho or in a character journal, you choose the in-character location (are they on Galactica? the island? in DC? on Earth? whose Earth? a bar?). If they're characters who've never met before (hello, crossover?) you can even tell me if you want this to be a first meeting, second meeting, an awkward reunion after two years, whatever. We can work out a background as necessary. Do you want to thread conflicted pre-canon questionably fun times between your Lee and my Starbuck? Do you want to expand upon the friendship between your Claire and my Kate? Do you want my Faye to hunt down your Vash the Stampede? I'm open and will play my character as close to canon as I can within whatever terms we discuss. The usual group of ladies are available: Kara Thrace, Kate Austen, Faye Valentine, and Julia. I also have journals for Hero Brown from Y: The Last Man and Anne Boleyn from The Tudors that I will readily volunteer. If there's a detail I'm honestly not sure I can do, we'll iron it out between us. I'm very willing to work with busy schedules! We can definitely put off starting the thread until after New Year's if that works best for you. Again, I'm sure it's not an issue, but I do ask that we keep this well away from rape, incest, graphic torture, etc.

I will post my thoughts on the fannish topic of your choice.
I don't see my rambling thoughts as much of a "gift," but hey, I love talking about stuff like characterization and if that's something you enjoy maybe starting a discussion is a gift that goes both ways? I'd prefer to keep this a little more personal than political, if that's okay. Do you want me to explain why I love one of my favorite characters? Do you want to make me think objectively about a character I'm not as wild about? Do you want me to write a detailed list of why my favorite fictional couples are my favorite fictional couples or why I love the women of BSG or why I think Kate Austen didn't deserve so much fandom hate or why Cowboy Bebop is still my favorite anime of all time? I'm making no guarantees about word count on this one.

To wrap this up, I repeat: ANYONE is welcome to take me up on any one of these offers through January 1st.

I don't have a wide audience so I don't see this getting anywhere near out of hand, but since my Yuletide story is a top priority and December is a busy month for everyone I'll just say I'll aim to address any requests I receive by mid-January, even if it's just that we've scheduled a thread for a later time.
